The last Saturday morning of each month at 10 am at the Orkney-Basye Rescue Squad building on route 263 between Basye and Orkney Springs (across 263 from the Blue Ridge Truss Company). Our goal is to provide good speakers each month, with topics of interest to all people in our area. No reservations are required and the programs are free. Creative Arts EducationalThe Great Valley RoadWonderful stories and video of some of the most charming and historic locations in Strasburg, Woodstock, Edinburg, Mt. Jackson, and New Market have been combined to tell each town's story as part of the television series Road Trip to History-The Great Valley Road. The videos feature local residents sharing the history of each town along this historic roadway....its churches, schools, downtown buildings, homes, legends and more. Historic photographs and beautiful video of the towns as they are now make for a compelling story. DVD copies may be available at each town's Chamber of Commerce or town office. Shenandoah National Park Presents Butterfly Photography Seminar
Saturday, July 12, 2008 William B. Folsom and Joseph Rossbach, photography workshop leaders at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens, will show you when, where and how to approach butterflies. They will provide technical tips for stunning results, whether you use a digital or film camera. Mary Willeford Bair, natural resource specialist with the National Park Service, will provide tips for identifying the most common butterflies found in this area. The workshop offers a mix of indoor Powerpoint programs and outdoor field practice. The workshop will be held rain or shine. The "Butterfly Photography and Identification" is $50 per person and reservations are required. Shenandoah National Park Association members receive a 20% discount. Lunch and program materials are included. Participants will need to provide their own camera. Seminars provide a more in-depth experience to learn from scientists, researchers, educators, and other experts about resource issues and recreational opportunities in Shenandoah National Park. Future seminars include two opportunities for "The Basics of Family Camping," July 19-20 and August 2-3, 2008. The Resource Seminar schedule can be found on the park's website at www.nps.gov/shen.
