The Great Valley Road

Wonderful stories and video of some of the most charming and historic locations in Strasburg, Woodstock, Edinburg, Mt. Jackson, and New Market have been combined to tell each town's story as part of the television series Road Trip to History-The Great Valley Road.

The videos feature local residents sharing the history of each town along this historic roadway....its churches, schools, downtown buildings, homes, legends and more. Historic photographs and beautiful video of the towns as they are now make for a compelling story.

DVD copies may be available at each town's Chamber of Commerce or town office.

Shenandoah National Park Presents Butterfly Photography Seminar

Saturday, July 12, 2008
Shenandoah National Park will be hosting a "Butterfly Photography and Identification" seminar on Saturday, July 12, 2008. As the park comes alive with a spectacular array of butterflies in mid-summer, here is the chance to learn from experts the best ways to identify and "capture" butterflies through photography.

William B. Folsom and Joseph Rossbach, photography workshop leaders at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens, will show you when, where and how to approach butterflies. They will provide technical tips for stunning results, whether you use a digital or film camera. Mary Willeford Bair, natural resource specialist with the National Park Service, will provide tips for identifying the most common butterflies found in this area. The workshop offers a mix of indoor Powerpoint programs and outdoor field practice. The workshop will be held rain or shine.

The "Butterfly Photography and Identification" is $50 per person and reservations are required. Shenandoah National Park Association members receive a 20% discount. Lunch and program materials are included. Participants will need to provide their own camera. To register, go to the Shenandoah National Park website at http://www.nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/resource_seminars.htm

"Butterfly Photography and Identification" is one of the Shenandoah National Park Resource Seminars designed for those who want to get to know their national park a little more personally. Seminars provide a more in-depth experience to learn from scientists, researchers, educators, and other experts about resource issues and recreational opportunities in Shenandoah National Park. Future seminars include two opportunities for "The Basics of Family Camping," July 19-20 and August 2-3, 2008. The Resource Seminar schedule can be found on the park's website at www.nps.gov/shen.

The Shenandoah National Park Resource Seminars are co-sponsored by the Shenandoah National Park Association, ARAMARK, and the National Parks Conservation Association.

For more information, contact the park's Education Office at 540-999-3489.
